Winning Parole Release in Texas

Serving as an advocate of prisoners eligible for parole is a heavy responsibility. In Texas, only 20 to 30 percent of eligible prisoners actually receive it on their first try. Parole is not automatic but rather approved at the discretion of a three-member panel known as the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles.

Under Texas parole laws, the Parole Board is not obligated to interview inmates eligible for parole, and due to their overwhelming caseload, it is not uncommon for good candidates for parole to be overlooked. According to statistics compiled by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, only two percent of offenders are actually interviewed by a member of the parole board.
